Feast of the Epiphany

On this Sunday, Christ is revealed as the Savior of all mankind, the light of the Nations.  The Wise Men were led by a star to Christ, who one day would declare: “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  (John 8:12)

Truly our Church and our world need the light of Christ more than ever before. The darkness is evident in so many places in the world, especially in countries ravaged by war and the fear of armed conflict.  Natural disasters and the havoc wreaked by hurricanes, tornados and floods seem to make our world a dark and dreary place.  Our world is in need of light! Where is this light going to come from?  The light we so desperately need is not going to come from up there, from the stars!  It will come from here on Earth.  Each one of us is called a light.  Jesus gave us that mission:  “You are the light of the world…your light must shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”  (Matthew 5:14)

How can we do this?  First of all by being a light to the members of our own families.  We can make sure that each one is included and receives the love, affection, and attention they need.  So many people look to have their needs fulfilled in the wrong places, when their families fail to provide it.  We can be a light to our friends and co-workers, by witnessing to the faith and hope which is ours.  We can be a light to those in our community who http://morgue.anglicansonline.org/090104/images/issueart/090104/WeThreeKings.jpggrieve, are lonely and sad.  Yes the most important treasure we have is time – but to give a little time means giving something that is precious to us – giving of ourselves.  It is truly good stewardship of our time.  The Christophers have a motto that is also an old Chinese proverb that says, “It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”  That is something that is in the power of each one of us to do.  Each day we start with a good resolution – to go out and be a light in a world of darkness.  Then they will know that you and I are Christians because we let God’s love shine through us!  “This little light of mine –

I’m going to set it shine!”

Lord of light, your day has broken in the East and we give you thanks!  It is not a star that guides us but a Son who is risen.  In his light we walk and in the end, which is our beginning, we shall find our way home.
